What is HIV?
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that can be transmitted through the transfer of bodily fluids, including blood, seminal and vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate and breast milk. The virus can be spread by sexual contact with someone who has the infection, by sharing needles or syringes with an infected person, or, rarely, through transfusions of infected blood. Early symptoms of HIV can be similar to that of a particularly bad cold or the flu.
What is the testing process?
The Better2Know Instant HIV test is completely confidential and anonymous. Our test only requires a simple blood drop sample, usually taken from the fingertip. At your appointment, your sample will be taken by an experienced clinician, who will run the test while you wait in the clinic. This test is a 4th generation test and will detect both types of HIV (type I and type II) as well as the p24 antigen. The test is suitable for both men and women.
Why should I get tested?
If left undetected, HIV can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or AIDS. AIDS is a condition in which the immune system begins to fail, leading to potentially fatal infections that the body would normally be able to combat naturally. The HIV virus reduces the number of CD4 cells that the body relies on to fight infection.
Early detection can prove vital in controlling the infection, with testing the only way to be certain of your HIV status. Better2Know has a number of different HIV testing options throughout Ireland. HIV can be tested for individually, or as part of a combination of tests, known as screens. Our fourth generation Instant HIV test is appropriate just 26 days after an incident of concern.
When will I receive my results?
A simple drop of blood is added to a test strip, followed by a drop of a reagent solution. This activates the test which then takes around 20 minutes to run. Your Better2Know clinician will give you your results before you leave the clinic.
What if my test is positive?
In the event of a reactive result, Better2Know will perform further, confirmatory testing for you at no extra charge. We can also arrange doctor consultations, either in person or over the phone, so you get all the support needed.
