What is a Better2Know Anti-Müllerian hormone test?
Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a glycoprotein made by specialised cells in men and women. Measuring the amount of Anti-Müllerian hormone in women is useful during fertility treatment. Levels of Anti-Müllerian hormone appear to correlate closely with ovarian reserve. Ovarian reserve is the number of viable eggs developing in a woman’s ovaries which will be released for possible fertilisation each month according to her menstrual cycle. Thus, measuring your AMH can give an indication of fertility and the likely duration of fertility prior to menopause. The AMH also plays an important role in several foetal developmental functions, including determining whether the reproductive organs of developing embryos become male or female.
Why consider an Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) test?
If you are wanting to start a family and are concerned about your fertility, getting an Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) test is a great place to start. This test result correlates well with both the quality and number of ovarian follicles remaining. Normal levels of Anti-Müllerian hormone indicate satisfactory fertility and couples should continue attempting to conceive naturally for a year, prior to seeking help. Low levels of Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) can indicate reduced fertility and also a lower likely response to IVF follicle stimulation treatment.
The level of Anti-Müllerian hormone circulating in the blood is significantly elevated in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This is a common condition where cysts form on the ovaries leading to irregular periods, heavy periods, reduced fertility, and pelvic area pain. An Anti-Müllerian hormone test is a useful diagnostic tool when PCOS is suspected or when relevant symptoms are present.
How does this test work?
The Anti-Müllerian hormone test or AMH test requires only a small blood sample. You will collect your blood sample from a simple finger prick and then allow a few drops of blood to drop into a small tube. We supply all the material you need to collect your sample in the kit provided. Once you have collected your blood sample, simply affix the personalised label we supply to the blood collection tube and follow the instructions in your kit. Your sample will need to be returned to our accredited laboratory in the prepaid postage envelope included in your kit. You will receive your results within one working day.
What tests will you run on my sample?
Your blood sample will be tested for the Anti-Müllerian hormone. Results will be interpreted and if outside the expected normal range, you will be advised to seek further medical advice.
When will my test kit arrive?
If ordered before 4pm Monday-Friday, your Anti-Müllerian hormone test kit will be mailed the very same day and should arrive in the next 2 to 4 days, depending on your location.
How will I receive my test results?
Your Anti-Müllerian hormone results will be available within one working day after your sample arrives at the lab. Better2Know will provide you with a confidential login code for our secure online patient login area, where you will be able to view your results once they are available. A member of our team will also contact you directly, to inform you when the results are in.
What should I do with my results?
If your results are outside the normal range for Anti-Müllerian hormone, you should seek medical advice on what to do next. Your test results might indicate that you have polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition that will require further medical intervention. Alternatively, if you are seeking to become pregnant, low levels of AMH indicate that you might require further assistance with your fertility through specialised treatments.
