What is a Myeloma Cancer Screen?
This test will assess whether you have a type of blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma. Myeloma is a type of blood and bone marrow cancer that develops in plasma cells. These cells are an important part of the immune system. Their primary function is to produce antibodies in order to help protect the body against infection.
Why consider a Myeloma Cancer Screen?
Every year in Ireland around 350 people are diagnosed with a Myeloma Cancer.
This test is suitable if you are worried, and you have been experiencing any of the following symptoms:
- Fatigue
- Bone pain
- Recurrent infections
- Tiredness
- Weakness
- Shortness of breath
- Kidney problems
How does this test work?
This test requires a urine sample and a blood sample. You will need to find a nurse to collect your blood sample for you. Once you have collected your samples, you can send them to our accredited laboratory for analysis using the postage-paid envelope.
What tests will you run on my sample?
This comprehensive test will assess the following:
- Full blood count (FBC) with a 5-part differential. This test checks the levels of all your different blood cells identifying any abnormalities.
- Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). The ESR measures the rate at which blood cells settle in a tube. Faster rates can indicate inflammatory problems.
- Protein electrophoresis. This test measures specific proteins in the blood to help identify diseases that you may have.
- Immunoglobulin test. This measures three specific types of immunoglobulins: IgG, IgM, and IgA. If your levels are too low or too high, it may be a sign of a serious health problem.
- Bence - Jones Protein. This protein is detected in urine and is a strong indicator of Multiple Myeloma
- Biochemistry profile. This profile will measure levels of glucose, urea, creatinine, bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), albumin, protein, cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL cholesterol), low-density lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol), calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium, chloride and uric acid.

Q: Why do you need my email address?
Your Patient Services Manager, Louise Wright, will email you your login details to access your results, a confirmation your kit has been dispatched and finally when all your results are ready.
