Semen Culture

What is a Semen Culture test?

Bacteria can infect many different parts of the body and cause problems. Bacterial infections of the male reproductive tract are not uncommon and require prompt treatment. When bacteria invade the male reproductive organs, they can cause pain and other symptoms, and interfere with the proper development and functioning of sperm. This is of particular concern for men wishing to reproduce, but any infections in this part of the body should be properly diagnosed, the bacterial species responsible identified and appropriate antibiotics administered to eliminate the infection.

Why consider a Semen Culture test?

If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort in your genitals, you should consider getting a test. What test to have can be confusing as there are many different types of bacteria that infect this region of the body. Many bacterial species can be detected by testing a urine sample specifically for them. This is commonly used to diagnose Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Mycoplasma and other infections. On occasion, however, urine tests come back negative indicating the cause of the discomforts are yet to be identified and requiring a Semen Culture test.

A Semen Culture test will detect a wide variety of bacterial species that could be infecting your reproductive tract. A feature of culture tests is that they are not specific. That means that they are very useful when you don’t know what might be infecting you, as the Semen Culture test will grow and identify any infecting organism.

What are the symptoms I should look out for?

Any time there is something that concerns you about your reproductive system, you should take action and get it checked. Particular symptoms that could point to an infection in your semen include:

  • A fever above 37.5°C
  • Feeling cold and shivery
  • Any swelling of the testicles
  • Pain when you urinate
  • Sore or painful testicles
  • Any unusual discharge from your penis
  • Semen that is yellow, green or otherwise unusual

How does this test work?

The Better2Know Semen Culture test requires only a sample of your semen. You should collect your semen sample by masturbation. It is important that you wash your hands and penis with warm soapy water before you collect your sample. Do not use any lubricant, saliva or other material as this can interfere with the test. Ejaculate into the container provided in your test kit and return your sample to our laboratory in the postage paid envelope provided. You will receive your results within two to four working days.

What tests will you run on my sample?

Your Semen sample will be cultured to see what different bacterial species might grow. This is done by putting some of your semen onto a glass plate that has a layer of culture medium on it. Any bacteria in your semen will grow and reproduce on the plate, and these bacterial colonies will then be analysed to determine what species they are. Our laboratory will also test these bacteria to determine what antibiotics will work the best against the specific kind of bacteria in your infection.
