What is a Better2Know Trichomonas test?
Trichomonas Vaginalis is a small organism that can infect the genital and reproductive tracts of both men and women. A Trichomonas infection can be easily spread through sexual contact between men and women, women and women and men and men. This infection seems to affect women more than men, but both can catch it. Trichomonas is one of the most common Sexually Transmitted infections around the world and the most common non-viral STI. Infection with Trichomonas is called Trichomoniasis or simply “Trich”. It is spread mostly from unprotected sex and by sharing sex toys which have not been properly cleaned after use.
Why consider a Trichomonas test?
A Trichomonas infection requires treatment as it will no go away on its own. Most people who have a Trichomonas infection will not have any symptoms so will not necessarily know that they are carrying the infection. Because Trichomonas is relatively easy to pass on, you do not need to have many sexual partners to be at risk. If you have had a new sexual partner, have not used condoms or have shared sex toys then you should consider getting a Trichomonas test. If you do have any symptoms of Trichomoniasis, these are likely to include the following:
- Redness, itching, burning or soreness of the genitals
- Discomfort when urinating
- A clear, white, yellowish, or greenish vaginal discharge
- Discharge with an unpleasant fishy smell
- Itching or irritation inside the penis
- Burning sensation after urinating or ejaculating
- Unusual discharge from the penis
In women, symptoms can include:
